How The ITV Sport Archive Works

The ITV Sport Archive are a team that work at the London Television Centre on the Southbank.  We are a small but versatile team of eight and we cover many aspects throughout our working day.  We manage the sports library and this consists of over 175,000 tapes, of various formats, in our storage facility in Leeds.  We service several ITV production areas on a daily basis.  The main areas are ITV Sport Production, ITV Creative (promos for ITV programming) and Entertainment and Drama programmes that require sports footage.

Sales are managed by Rita Costantinou and Paul Johnson and they both advise on rights and fees.  Sport rights are complicated and change on a regular basis!

ITV has a tapeless working environment with all newborn material and manage this through an EVS/IPD system.  This allows us to ingest material straight to a server and store that file in a place of our choice.  We carry out many functions on a daily basis and these include:

- Ingest of old tape formats

- Ingest of newborn material through line feeds, camera cards and discs

- Electronically send and receive files in various codecs
